Why is an SIA card important if you want to work as a Door Supervisor?
Since 2001, it has been against the law for those working in the security industry to do so without a proper licence.
The system is regulated by the SIA, the Security Industry Authority, which is answerable directly to the Home Office and is responsible for assessing those who apply for a licence, ensuring they are properly trained and for prosecuting those who break the law.
Anyone who wants to work as a security guard, door supervisor or CCTV operator must be aged over 18, permitted to work in the UK, have completed the SIA training and exams and been granted an SIA licence.
This is called a Frontline licence and is for those people who will be coming into contact with the public.
Security supervisors, managers or directors who are not in direct contact with the public also must have a licence, called a non-Frontline licence.
The first step in applying for a Frontline licence is to prove your ID and supply a photograph. The SIA will also do checks into an applicant?s criminal record.? Depending on the SIA?s assessment if you do have a criminal record, you may still be able to go on to the next stage of qualifying for a licence
Once you have passed this stage you will be asked to complete four courses, a total of 30 hours? training, and pass an exam in each.
The courses to complete are:
- Unit 1 – Working in the Private Security Industry
- Unit 2 – Working as a Door Supervisor
- Unit 3 – Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry
- Unit 4 – Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry
Anyone who already had a licence before September 2010 will need to do additional training because the fourth unit, Physical Intervention Skills was introduced then
A frontline licence is a credit card-type badge whereas a non-frontline licence is a paper – type licence.
If you have a Frontline licence you will also be covered for working in non-frontline roles. However, the non-Frontline licence holder cannot work in a public- facing role. ?To order your SIA?card holder click here?or the image below. ?We can supply companies or individuals as required.
